Red Tide Surfing San Diego 2011 Bioluminescence from Loghan Call on Vimeo.

No, someone didn’t mess with the video – these waves are really glowing blue! ┬áIt’s a natural occurrence called “red tide,” where phytoplankton bloom in mass. This particular species of phytoplankton glow when disturbed. What’s also great is the plankton (unless youre eating it) wont harm you – it’s totally safe to swim and surf in, at least on the west coast. Apparently red tides in Florida in the recent past have had a lot of toxic issues. No fair! The video here was taken in San Diego last summer.

Look for red tides in late summer or early fall if there has been warm water for a long period of time followed by a cold water upwelling creating the perfect conditions for an algae bloom.
